But from what I’ve seen in a wonderful recent biography of his, if he was homophobic, it was the homophobia of a man who was so attracted to other men, that he feared in himself, that is, it doesn’t seem to be to be the kind of homophobia of the far right, the kind of simple hatred. It’s a highly complex homophobia, if it’s there. It is a homophobia of a man who’s totally under the control of women. He was under the control of very powerful women throughout his life, from his mother, to his wife, and so on.
